Augustinus Bader Review: The Lip Balm {Updated October 2022}

Let me just say that having grown up in Hawaii, I rarely used lip balm. There was no such thing as chapped lips in my childhood, unless we went to the US mainland. So I’m not really experienced with lip balms and I was never a chapstick addict. I’ve tried various lip balms since moving to California (20 years ago lol) and thus far I have never found one that I loved. I basically went from chapstick to a free Sephora sample or another when I needed it. But now my search is over because I can definitely say that the AB lip balm is The One.

LED Light Therapy Face Mask Review

Have you guys heard of LED light therapy for your skin? Well I was once an early adopter of these at-home LED light tools, and I had an early version of an LED wand like this LightStim for acne. But I never could keep it up because it required doing it in front of a mirror and moving the wand around to various spots on the face (because I’ve always had a lot of spots lol). But Jennifer Fisher recommended one of these full face LED Light Therapy Face Masks because it does your whole face in one sitting, and I knew I wanted to try one out. I decided to go with this one since it has great reviews on Amazon (4.3 stars out of 1700+ reviews). And you guys I was not disappointed.

Touchland Hand Sanitizer Review

The review for these Touchland Hand Sanitizers has been sitting in my drafts folder for over a year now since I got them in December 2019 to give as gifts for Christmas. Little did I know that a pandemic and subsequent hand sanitizer shortage would be just around the corner. Luckily I kept a few for myself and didn’t give away all of my 6-pack set and thus had some hand sanitizer when I really needed it. But now that hand sanitizer production is in overdrive and you can purchase it everywhere, would I recommend these fancy spray hand sanitizers?

Unsponsored U Beauty Review: The Resurfacing Compound {November 2021 update}

I first heard about U Beauty (a women-owned, POC brand) through Jennifer Fisher’s Instagram, though I’ve known about Tina since her BagSnob days (one of the OG bag blogs). I’ve trusted JF before when she led me to Augustinus Bader (I talk about that in my Augustinus Bader Rich Cream review), so I thought I’d take a chance with this U Beauty Resurfacing Compound on her recommendation.

Dr. Barbara Sturm Review

I heard of the Dr. Barbara Sturm serums awhile back now and finally bit the bullet to try it during one of Sephora’s year end sales last year. Yep, I bought this Flight Essentials kit over 5 months ago (lol when taking a flight was a given—ahh how the world has changed since then). Anyway I decided on this kit because it had all the things I wanted to try: The Face Cream Rich (so I could compare it to my all-time favorite, and fellow German-made product, the Augustinus Bader Rich Cream) and the Super Anti-Aging Serum (which I’ve seen heralded on so many Insta accounts). So how does the Dr. Barbara Sturm products measure up?

Kosas Review: The Tinted Face Oil and Wet Lip Oil Gloss

As I mentioned in my December What I Bought post, I decided to try out this Kosas Tinted Face Oil because I was looking for a lighter colored foundation for the winter time (I usually use the Suntegrity 5-in-1 tinted sunscreen for the summer). I read about Kosas, a clean beauty line on several blogs and definitely wanted to try it out because of the rave reviews. Well I’m just going to let you know it did not work for me at all.

Victoria Beckham Beauty x Augustinus Bader Primer Review (aka the Cell Rejuvenating Priming Moisturizer) {Updated May 2021}

via

You know how much I love my Augustinus Bader Rich Cream (reviewed here) so I was super excited to try the Victoria Beckham Beauty x Augustinus Bader primer (also known as the Cell Rejuvenating Priming Moisturizer). I was formally using the Augustinus Bader Cream in the mornings before makeup, and it worked alright as long as I let the moisturizer absorb completely. And then I would also use the Benefit POREfessional face primer, which I like for not breaking me out and also giving me a smoother surface for makeup application. So I thought wouldn’t it be great if I could replace those two products with this one? Also the Benefit primer has silicone in it which I’m trying to get away from.

Well, that would have been nice but unfortunately it isn’t quite that perfect. First off, it’s a great light moisturizing cream. I have acne-prone skin and I love that it doesn’t break me out. It moisturizes well enough, even in the winter. But I don’t see any transformative effects, though granted I’ve only been using it for about a month. I also am still using my AB Rich cream at night so I can’t really tell the effects of this moisturizing primer alone. I guess I’m a little meh about this priming moisturizer because it’s doesn’t really act a primer on its own. I still find myself using my Benefit primer over this one to get a really smooth starting canvas for makeup.

Victoria Beckham Augustinus Bader Review

I do however like the bottle that this moisturizer comes in. It’s actually much better and feels way more luxe that the bulky plastic bottle the Augustinus Bader creams come in. The nozzle of the bottle is made from metal (aluminum I think?) and it dispenses really well. VB Beauty does make an effort in making their products sustainable and it shows with their packaging, from the bottle to the shipping materials. It was the first time I’ve received a package from a beauty company with non-plastic materials. Even the “dust bag” the item comes in reminds me of Celine bag dust bags.

Anyway I’m not sure if I would repurchase this item. But we’ll see how long this one bottle lasts. If it lasts longer and works just as well as the AB regular cream I might look into repurchasing this over the AB cream. I’m also interested to see how this primer will work with my makeup in the summer when my makeup tends to melt off more. But I’ll be sure to update this review answering all these questions in the future!

{May 2021 Update: So it’s been about a year and a half and I just finished this primer (I think I got the 30ml version). Granted, it was during a pandemic so I rarely wore makeup and thus haven’t touched this primer ffor most of the year. I think if I were to use this daily, I would be out in 6 months or so. Anyway now that I’ve finished it, would I repurchase? For me right now it’s a yes. I haven’t found any other primer I like that doesn’t break me out. I’m tempted to try the golden primer version but I’m afraid it might be too dark for my rather pale skin tone (and it’s pale because I avoid the sun like the plague). Also I’ve just recently joined the Augustinus Bader Club on their website where I earn loyalty points for future discounts, in which case I can re-purchase this primer at a slight discount (depending on the points I accumulate). Then I might try the golden one as well. If you’re interested in joining the AB Club to get 20% off your first order and a free body lotion with your AB replenishment order you can fill out this google form and I will send you the invite asap (usually within 24 hours). I’m a huge fan of the AB club since you can earn points to get savings on your next order, and if you do a replenishment order your 6th product is free. And I’m all for getting free AB products 😁

I purchased the two Primer set: one that is the original and one that is the golden. I’ll just say I’m still a huge fan of the original but I’m not a fan of the golden primer. I have a fairly light complexion and the golden makes me looks like I put on some bad self-tanner tbh. It doesn’t match my skin tone at all. Even under makeup, it changes my coloring a bit and I’m not a fan 🤷🏻‍♀️}

Luxe Refill Review

via

After I wrote about my zero waste shower routine here, I was contacted by a new-to-me zero waste bath and body products brand called Luxe Refill. They kindly gifted me the set pictured above (all in the Luxe Lavendar scent) in exchange for a review, but of course all opinions here are my own.

Just like some other zero waste bath product companies their bottles are all aluminum and are returnable to the company when you order a refill. They do offer plastic pumps for the aluminum bottles, but they are only sent with your first shipment and are meant to be reused. And if your bottle is too banged up to be reused, they are recyclable just like an aluminum can.

So let’s start with my faaavorite of the bunch: the after shower oil. I’ve tried several different kinds of body oils in the past and I find oils perfect for these super dry winter months. I love their after shower oil because it’s moisturizing without being greasy and it absorbs easily into the skin. The scent is not overpowering. And this oil has been great for my sensitive skin (some oils give me red bumps, even on my body, but not this one). This would also work great as a massage oil if you’re lucky enough to know an amateur masseuse/masseur.

I also really liked the shea butter lotion, which was less scented and a much lighter moisturizer. It also absorbed quickly into the skin and didn’t give me any irritation. My only complaint is that it was a tad too thick for the small pump bottle it came in so I had to dispense the lotion old-school-ketchup-bottle style. This lotion might dispense better in the bigger sizes though.

The daily shampoo and conditioner were great and got the job done. The conditioner though wasn’t super thick and moisturizing but that’s probably what their deep conditioning cream is for. The only product that I wasn’t a huge fan of was their gentle body wash, but that’s because I prefer more gel-like body washes that foam up easily while theirs was more of a milky-type body wash.

But I love that all their products are 100% natural and plant based without any parabens, artificial colors or synthetic fragrances. Also all of these products that I tried are vegan. So if you’re looking for some great zero waste bath products I definitely recommend giving Luxe Refill a try (and you can use the code HW20 to get 20% off your first purchase).

A Fairly Curated Holiday Gift Guide

I’ve been in the blogging game for about 5 years now and have never put out a holiday gift guide before because I disliked the idea of feeding into the consumer frenzy around the holidays. So I’ve boycotted gift guides in the past. But this year I felt that instead of being all Scroogey about it, I should embrace the fact that many of us like to give gifts during the holidays. And since I try a lot of products during the year and do a lot of reviews for this blog, it’s worth mentioning some of my favorite items that I think would make great gifts. Also since this is my first gift guide, I’m not sure the best way to organize this but I’ve decided to go from least expensive to most.

Marleys Monsters Review

Marley’s Monsters Cotton Facial Rounds ($18): I first reviewed them here a year ago and love them are still going strong. They’ve held up really well (both the bamboo and cotton versions). I prefer the cotton rounds because they’re softer and absorb more toner even though they pill a bit more with multiple washings. This zero waste gift is perfect for that beauty addict in your life!

safety razor review

Safety Razor ($29): This is a life-changer guys and it’s great for the environment. The receiver of this gift might be a little intimidated by it, so just send them a link to my blog post about it here lol :)

Everlane Review ReNew Catch All Case

Everlane ReNew Catch-All Case ($30): Ok so this is the only item on this list that I haven’t personally purchased or tried out myself…yet. I’m very tempted to get this all purpose small bag because I can’t get enough small bags. Also I love that Everlane is working hard to make this case from 100% recycled materials. {Update: Actually I just purchased this to give as gifts and will let you know what I think of it when I get it!}

Screen Shot 2019-11-14 at 12.57.31 PM.png

Salt Farm Truffle Salt ($40): I’ve been buying this salt for three years now and I still use it almost every morning on my eggs. Outside of Italy, this is the best truffle salt I’ve ever found (even better than those at Williams Sonoma or other cooking shops/markets). And a bottle of this lasts me all year.

gemiani review

Top Fill Humidifier ($45): I love this large top filling humidifier from Amazon. It’s so easy to add water (I really hate those humidifiers where you have to screw a top and then flip over to load into the base). I purchased one for myself and one for my mom for her birthday. It’s especially needed during these uber dry winter months.

le labo lotion review

Le Labo Lotion ($69): I love love love my Le Labo lotion in Jasmine. It’s the little bit of luxury that has replaced my perfume and it’s also great for my skin. The Jasmine scent is perfectly subtle and dreamy.

Renpho Air Purifier Review

Renpho Air Purifier ($120): For those who read my air purifier review here you know this is my favorite of the bunch. What’s a better gift than that of clean air?

Augustinus Bader Review

Augustinus Bader Rich Cream ($170): If you really love someone, then I would highly recommend getting the AB Rich Cream. It’s a dream present and I believe it can change the texture of anyone’s skin for the better. You can read my review of it here. Oh I just noticed they also have a new $85 (15ml) version of it here.

Everlane Review Mini Form Bag

Everlane Form Mini Bag ($190): I love my Everlane mini form bag (reviewed here). It fits all the essentials, and the leather is beautiful yet durable. For those who need to carry a laptop with them, the regular form bag ($235) is also super useful and gorgeous!

Something from The RealReal or Fashionphile (what budget?): Lol, these are my two favorite online consignment sites and I’ve talked about them a lot and purchased many items from both. For purses, especially high-end ones, I always go with Fashionphile because 1) they have a better authentication process IMO and 2) they allow returns. The RealReal is better for more reasonably prices designer clothes and accessories. I know buying used things is not really a thing yet for most people when gift giving but I say why not? The items are still useful and valuable!

And lastly, I just wanted to mention that some of the best gifts are not things (but of course you know this). Some of the gifts I’ve enjoyed the most in the past are experiences (a special dinner out or a special dinner made at home) or quality time with someone. As for my husband and I, we are in dire need of a new dishwasher so that will be the present we give each other (especially since neither of us like to wash dishes lol).

What are some of your favorite gifts to give to your friends and family?

Top 10 Favorite Things I've Blogged About

I wrote a post like this last March, so I thought it would be interesting to update this list because my top 10 favorite items have changed quite a bit. Is it because I’ve blogged about so many more new items or is it because as a human I always will love the new and the exciting? Well there are some repeats on here and I’d be interested to see how much this list will change/stay the same again next year.

ES Mara Jumpsuit + Celine Soft Cube Bag

ES Mara Jumpsuit + Celine Soft Cube Bag

1) Elizabeth Suzann Mara Jumpsuit (reviewed here) in both silk and linen (no longer made): I bought the silk one used and loved it so much that I also got a linen one later when it went on “sale” over at ES. I wear both constantly and they’re such work horses in my wardrobe. See how one of my favorite grammers, mayetteraisa styles her Mara during the #fauxfall10x10 challenge.

2) Celine Soft Cube Bag (reviewed here): One of the most worn bag in my closet and I did a 100 wears later post here. Currently using this bag for my one month in Hawaii and I’m in love with this bag again. It’s the perfect size, minimal yet chic, and can be carried by hand or across the body. I will never give this bag up!

3) Augustinus Bader Rich Cream: I reviewed it here and I still love it (just started my third bottle for the year—it lasts me about 4 months). I’m officially an AB Cream addict and it’s an expensive habit (though I justify it by saying I buy about 3 bottles a year for a total of about $800 a year and that’s still less than microneedling treatments or any other cosmetic procedure). My skin texture has vastly improved and I suffer from far fewer pimples than I used to before the cream. It’s no wonder this is a favorite cream for lots of people.

4) Everlane Modern Utility Jacket (reviewed here): I don’t talk about this jacket a lot and it was only featured once during a 10x10 challenge, but I looooove this jacket. As soon as the weather is cool enough I wear it everywhere. It’s also a great dog walking jacket since there are multiple pockets and it’s water resistant. This one has become a classic in my wardrobe.

5) Thinx Underwear (on last year’s list): Still love my Thinx. It came in handy during my difficult pregnancy with multiple bleeds and leaking amniotic fluid during the end of the pregnancy (lol sorry TMI?). I liked them so much I ordered another couple of them just recently and wrote a new review of them here.

6) Storq Easy Pants: Loved these when I was pregnant and love them now that I have fibroids. Basically these easy pants are the best thing when you don’t want a constricting waist band around your tummy. It’s like wearing PJs in public.

Lovevery review

7) Lovevery Toys and Play Mat: Of course this is for Emi and not for me, but when baby’s happy and occupied Mama’s happy and otherly occupied. I love that she can play on the playmat for (cumulatively) hours a day, it’s easy to clean, and so well built. As for the toys, she still loves some of her toys from the 3-4 month box (and she’s 7 months now). I liked the toys so much I went ahead and purchased the 7-8 month box in anticipation of her growing tired of her first set of toys but that has yet to happen. I expect her to play with her new toys until she’s a year old!

8) PACT Underwear (also on last year’s list): My faves are the lace waistband ones and my original pairs have held up great. They’re comfy, well-made, well-priced and made from organic cotton. I don’t know what more you could want for reliable underwear!

9) Martiniano Glove Shoes: Aka the Bentley of flats. I love these shoes for their buttery leather that not only make them super comfy but oh so luxurious. Even after recently purchasing Chanel ballet flats (reviewed here), I think the Martiniano Glove shoes are above and beyond a more luxurious shoe.

10) A Zero Waste Shower Routine: Ok, so this isn’t just one thing but I’m pretty happy with my total zero waste shower routine. On those days I feel like I don’t measure up or I’m not doing enough, being able to feel like I’m making some kind of progress every time I shower is sometimes the little boost I need.

Anyway this post has also helped me reflect on all the various things I’ve tried on this blog and I’m so grateful for everyone who comes here to read what I’ve got to say. Thank you to all of you guys who say the nicest things about my reviews and who make writing this blog worth it!

My Zero-Waste Shower Routine

via

I don’t know how it is for you, but getting to any kind of consistent zero-waste routine has been quite a struggle for me. So now that I’ve got my shower routine down to zero waste I couldn’t be prouder. Granted, this stuff is pretty low hanging fruit. But still it’s progress, right? So here are the ways my shower routine is now zero waste:

1) Shampoo, Conditioner, and Body Wash from Plaine Products

Yep, reviewed this back in 2017 and I’m still going strong. However, shipping back the aluminum cans can be kind of a pain so I’m looking into ordering from The Good Fill next (they ship their products in reusable plastic pouches that you ship back and you use your own containers—I’ll be reusing the Plaine Product containers of course).

2) Organic Cotton Washcloths from Muji

I’ve never blogged about these before but I love my organic cotton Muji washcloths. They’re thin enough that when they’re full of soap and water they don’t get super weighed down. And they’re just enough gentle exfoliation for my sensitive skin. I’ve been using them for years and they’ve held up like a champ.

3) Safety Razor

And the new zero waste love of my life is my safety razor, which I reviewed here. No cuts or nicks yet—you just have to use the very slightest of pressure. Also I use the Plaine Products conditioner as a shaving cream. But if you’re prone to cuts with a safety razor I recently found this other zero waste razor that is more like traditional razors.

Okay so yes that was a pretty short list. But really that’s all it takes to be zero waste in the shower. For my face wash, I use these small microfiber wash cloths to remove make-up and these cotton rounds for toner. Unfortunately my favorite face wash for acne-prone skin and toner don’t yet come in a zero-waste option. But my beauty routine is one of the next things I want to tackle to make zero waste. Anyone have tips for zero waste beauty?

Go Through That Beauty Drawer (or in my case, that beauty plastic bin)

via

Having been an ex-Sephora addict (VIP Rouge easily 5 years in a row), I have spent a lot of money on makeup and skincare (I also used to buy many a duplicates of stuff whenever Sephora would have their sales). And having moved from house to trailer to apartment means that all those beauty products have lived in a plastic bin for the last couple of years. Well now that we’re settled in this apartment for a bit, I decided to finally go through that bin to either use or lose these things. Hence my return to powder foundation (but also due to more even skin thanks to Augustinus Bader Rich Cream). And having gone through all my beauty stuff, I have now vowed not to buy any more lotion until I’ve used up every tube or bottle I have stocked in that bin. Ditto for lip products and nail polish. But now that my skin is at a happy place, I’m hesitant to use some of the stuff I purchased on a whim but haven’t tried yet. Like those clay masks and serums. And yet to straight throw them away would be such a pity for both my wallet and the environment.

So I did some research and found several places you can donate your gently used or unused items. My favorite and the one I sent my products to is Project Beauty Share, based out of Spokane, Washington. They distribute donated items to women who are trying to get back on their feet, whether from homelessness or addiction. And here are the things they accept and don’t accept. Also if you happen to be a hotel bath products hoarder like myself, then you can also donate all unused hotel products. I liked Project Beauty Share the best of all the organizations out there because they’ll take your gently used items (not just brand new and unopened). Because hey if it’s good enough for most people to try the sometimes gross-samples laid out at Sephora, a gently used item from one person shouldn’t go completely to waste (and fill up those landfills). So if you have any gently used items that, c’mon let’s be real, you’re not going to be using any time soon (or at all) send them to Project Beauty Share at 2718 E. Sprague, Spokane, WA 99202. If you live in Spokane, there are physical drop off locations to save on shipping costs.

And when you have your box all packed (but before you tape it up) take in all the things you didn’t use. Also add to that the cost of postage to donate (depending on what you’re donating, it might be cheaper to do a flat rate box, especially if you’re shipping across the country. And if you’re doing a flat rate box but it’s not full yet, go and ask your friends or family if they have anything they might want to donate). And remember all this before you splurge on your next skin care or makeup item.

P.S. Project Beauty Share will also take individually wrapped tampons and pads so if you have any that you’re not going to use, send them those as well (I have some pads that I bought for the post-pregnancy bleed but I hate pads and will not use the rest of them so I’m glad they’re going to get used by someone else).

P.P.S. I used to be a crazy nail polish consumer and I had several smaller plastic bins of it (this was before learning about zero waste and being more conscious of my consumption habits in general). But since you can’t send used nail polish to Project Beauty Share, I’ve sold my nail polish via storenvy and had moderate success. I also gave many of my bottles away to friends. I might not be making my money back but I’m feeling good that they’re being used by somebody else (and TBH nail polish is shared so many times at a nail salon so again getting a personal nail polish used by one person is comparatively nbd). Just something to keep in mind if you’re ever trying to get rid of nail polish (because also technically you should not just be throwing these away in the trash—here’s how to safely dispose of them).

Unsponsored Augustinus Bader Rich Cream Review: Is it really worth it? {Updated April 2024}

Lol, I am surprised as you are at how much I actually love this cream. I am very picky about my skin care after years (more like decades) of acne (read about that here). Plus I have very sensitive skin that’s prone to both rashes and clogged pores. Rarely do items work for my skin, so when I find one that doesn’t break me out (like the Elemis SOS cream I’ve been using for the last 4-5 years) I tend to stick with it. So when I say I love this AB cream and “this works” I am not exaggerating (and it works so much better than my Elemis cream).

My Winter Skin Care Routine (and no, you don't have to get all new products)

Lol too wintery a pic already?

Lol too wintery a pic already?

I’ve talked about my summer skincare routine in the past (focusing mostly on SPF because that is of the utmost importance). But I’ve never talked about my winter skin care routine and actually before this year I never really had one. I just kept doing what I did during the summer, drier skin be damned. But this year, maybe because of the pregnancy, my skin is ultra itchy and dry so it’s time to take action. And by action, I mean adding two things to my usual routine.

{side note: if you’re interested in my usual routine for my sensitive acne-prone skin I detail it here in this post but here’s a quick rundown. AM: charcoal cleanser (SkinSalvation), sterilizing tonic (SkinSalvation), Moisturizer (in the summer it’s Paula’s Choice SPF Fluid (reviewed here) and I’ll review below what I’m using this winter), Suntegrity 5-in-1 moisturizing sunscreen in light (reviewed here). PM: Same charcoal face wash with microfiber washcloth to remove makeup, same sterilizing tonic, and Elemis SOS Emergency Cream. Yep that’s it. Nothing too fancy and using the same products mostly for morning and night.}

So as I mentioned above, the only real difference between summer and winter this year is the change-up in my moisturizer. I don’t need the double SPF coverage in the winter (the Suntegrity spf 30 is enough), but I do need extra moisture and the SPF fluid just doesn’t cut it. So lately I’ve been using Paula’s Choice Redness Relief Moisturizer in the morning and it’s so good! It’s made for dry sensitive skin and it really does work for my utlra sensitive skin. It doesn’t break me out and it has the added bonus of helping my Suntegrity tinted sunscreen go on super smoothly. Just this one change has really made a difference in how my skin looks and feels in the morning (I guess dryness really does affect the skin).

Another moisturizer that I’ve switched over to is the Curel Itch Defense Calming Body lotion. As much as I love the smell and luxury of my Le Labo lotion (which I now currently use instead of any kind of perfume), the Le Labo lotions just don’t cut it for the winter. Luckily I found these on sale at Target and decided to give them a shot. It’s such a good no-frills lotion that actually does what it advertises: prevents itchiness! Also the $7.50 price tag doesn’t hurt. I put this on right after getting out of the shower and then if I want a bit of scent I’ll add the Le Labo on top. Double the moisture!

And lastly this is more for the preggo people out there, but I’ve been using Earth Mama Belly Butter for my growing belly and it’s been so awesome. This all organic lotion helps prevent stretch marks and is super moisturizing without being too greasy. I originally tried the fancy Tata Harper Redefining Body Balm, also meant to prevent stretch marks, when I saw another preggo blogger using. But it didn’t work for me at all and gave me a small rash too. And for 12x the price of the Earth Mama one? No thank you! Luckily I purchased it at Sephora and was able to return it.

So anyway this is what has been working for me but I know everyone’s body chemistry is different so it might not be the same for you. But at least if you purchase things from Sephora or Nordstroms you can still return after trying (just keep the receipt!). And so if you find yourself with drier skin lately, it might be worth a shot :)

Unsponsored Dyson Airwrap Styler Review

unsponsored Dyson Airwrap review

So that pic is not the best one I probably could have taken of the Dyson Airwrap Styler but I just wanted to show you guys the dedication I had in using it consistently so that I could write a good review for you guys. I took this on my Airstream road trip, which meant during the times we were dry camping (ie had no electricity or water hook-ups) I ran a generator so that I could use this. Yes, running a generator for my hair dryer, lol I guess I’m that kind of “camper”.

Also I should just note here as a disclaimer that I’m not one to do my hair at all (I don’t even blow dry it, just let it air dry). So my skills with any hair tool is limited. In the hands of someone with more experience (ie does their hair every day), you might get different results. But this review is coming for a noob.

So after a good several weeks of usage here is my review of the Airwrap Volume + Shape Styler-For Fine, Flat Hair. They have three versions of this, and I got the one for fine, flat hair (the other one was for curly, frizzy hair and there is one with everything). I would have gotten the complete set (at $550 so only $50 more than the other two sets) but they were all sold out. First of all I love that this hair dryer is so light. It’s the lightest hair dryer I’ve ever used and feels lighter than my regular curling iron. But even though it’s lightweight, it really packs a punch. The hair dryer is probably one of the best hair dryers I’ve ever used and it dries my hair super fast (but of course I usually go for the $50 hair dryer and this is a $500 one).

The buttons on the main body are really easy to use one-handed so it’s super easy to turn it on and off. And the different tool heads/styling attachments are really easy to put on and take off. Now about each attachment:

The pre-styling dryer: Like I said above, it really heats up and dries my hair super fast. When I first started using it, I would accidentally dry my hair too much and it would no longer be damp enough to style with it. I can dry my hair (fine, flat hair) in about 5 minutes or less (depending how well I towel dry).

The smoothing brush: I really like this attachment when I just want to keep my hair straight. It really does smooth out my hair and takes out any frizzies. Also it makes my hair shine (maybe because it uses “negative ions” to help reduce static?). I like this better than a straightening iron since it doesn’t make my hair pancake flat.

The round brush: So this was the attachment I was most interested in because I love the look of my hair when the stylist uses a round brush for my hair, but I have the hardest time using a hair dryer and round brush at the same time when doing my own hair. I thought with this attachment everything would be in one lightweight piece so win-win. Well in all honesty it’s still hard to do. I can’t seem to get the hair to stay wrapped around the brush because the hot air is blowing out. And the results just don’t look the same. This attachment is a bit of a disappointment at this point, though it might just be due to my lack of hair skills. However I will say when I use these on my bangs, they turn out great and stay great for days

1.2 in curling barrel (one in each direction): And now finally to the attachment that this whole set is about, the self-curling curling iron effect. So the whole gimmick behind this dyson tool is that if you hold up a piece of hair, the dyson airwrap will pull the hair in and wrap the hair around the barrel on its own. It’s like magic right? Well, this is probably the most disappointing attachment of them all and if you’re buying this set just for this feature, I would say you’re better off just sticking with your good ‘ole curling iron. First of all, if you have a lot of hair, it will take you forever to curl your hair with this thing. It can only pull in small pieces of hair at a time. Even with my fine flat hair, it took forever to curl every bit of it. Second of all it’s not as easy as just dangling a piece of hair next to the tool because sometimes the tool wants to pick up only a part of it, or if you’re not careful it will pick up a different piece of hair. And lastly getting the tips to curl is also a pain. I know there’s a learning curve to all this but I’ve done it multiple times and I still have issues. TBH it’s not worth it for me at my skill level. Oh and with the hot air blowing out from the tool, it gives a blast of hot air to your scalp all the while. That’s nice for the winter but not great for the summer. The barrel itself gets pretty hot to touch though it won’t burn you if you accidentally touch it. Oh and lastly, the barrel on this is pretty skinny even though it says 1.2 inches, so you’ll get pretty small curls. I prefer softer bigger waves so I’m not a fan of this one. If I want to curl my hair I’m going to go back to my curling iron both because of the ease of use and for larger softer curls.

So in conclusion? I would not get this if you’re looking for the next newest and best curling iron. I mean if you do, get ready to put in some time getting this to work for you. However I’m actually a bit torn because I really do like the hair drying and smoothing brush attachments and I have hopes that I can master the round brush attachment too. I’m not one to curl my hair very often so I probably wouldn’t be using the curling attachments anyway but they’re nice to have just in case. As a multi-hair styling tool, I think this is a pretty good set. But is it worth $500? I don’t think so, but it would be a great tool at say $300. As for me, I’m going to keep trying it out and will update this review if I have a change of heart. Or if I give up, I might just sell it. We’ll see.

P.S. I should note that even with consistent use, I didn’t feel like my hair got scorched or damaged by this tool. I also don’t use any hair products since I don’t wash my hair everyday and don’t like getting pore-clogging products on my pillowcase. But anyway this is just to say, dyson does seem to have as they promised “intelligent heat control measures air temperature over 40 times a second to prevent extreme heat damage while styling.” Then again I don’t use this everyday, only when I wash my hair (which I can get by doing every 3 days after “training” my hair).

Tata Harper Review: The Purifying Mask and the Clarifying Mask {June 2020 Update}

tata harper mask review (1 of 1)-min.jpg

Let me start off this post by saying I’m not a face mask person. I have super sensitive acne-prone skin that freaks out with most face masks. The masks for acne usually dry out my skin and/or don’t do anything, while a lot of other masks I tried for even sensitive skin will cause my skin to burn or break out in a rash. And sheet masks? Forget ‘em, I’ve had too many bad reactions to even try those out again.

So I was really pleasantly surprised when I tried out a sample of the Tata Harper Clarifying Mask and I loved it. I had tried a Tata Harper serum once before (like 5 years ago when they first started having a buzz) and I hated the smell of it. So I promptly returned it to Sephora and have stayed away from Tata Harper since then. But thanks to influencers on Instagram (mostly Jamie from annstreetstudio) the Clarifying mask has been on my radar (this is the Tata Harper mask that makes everyone’s faces green). So when I saw the sample for offer I jumped at the chance to try it. And then it took me another month or so before I actually tried it. But as soon as I used it, I was a believer. No stinging, no tightness, and when I took off the mask my skin felt much smoother and softer. This is probably the only product where I’ve actually felt an instant difference.

Just one sample and I was a convert, so I spent some Citi Thank you points to buy the full-size jar. And since I had enough credit, I decided to try the Purifying Mask as well (more on that in a bit). I’ve been using the Clarifying Mask once a week now and I can say that any zits I do get shrink right away and don’t get further inflamed. My skin overall is looking clearer and smoother for sure. For once, all the claims for clearing up sensitive acne-prone skin is true.

Also I love that Tata Harper only uses non-toxic, 100% natural ingredients with no synthetics. The Clarifying mask has the following active ingredients:

-Alpha Hydroxy Acid Superfruit Blend: Provides chemical exfoliation to help minimize the appearance of blemishes and breakouts.
-Quartz Sand Micro-Crystals: Provide physical exfoliation to soften and smooth the look of the skin.
-Soothing Super Seed Blend: Helps calm and relieve the appearance of redness on the skin.
-Raw Honey Enzymes: Simultaneously moisturize and cleanse the skin, helping pores appear clear and clean.

And lastly, I know this Clarifying Mask is not cheap but it really does feel like the ultimate luxury when using it. The green glass bottle has a nice weight to it while the golden lid is super pretty. And even though the jars look small, there is a lot of product in there and I feel like it will last be months (I’ll update this post once I finish the jar to let you know how long it actually lasted).

Like I said above, I also purchased the Purifying Mask, which I also have been using once a week. Since both masks have an acid component (AHA) to help exfoliate the skin (thus limiting breakouts by clearing out dead skin from the pores) I only use them each once a week and I space it out by several days in between. I especially space it out since my skin is super sensitive, but if your skin is tougher you could probably do it three times a week. So the Purifying Mask is also meant to help clear acne prone skin and these are the natural active ingredients in this one:

-Lactobacillus: Thoroughly cleanses without stripping the skin or affecting the skin's natural balance.
-Brown Algae: Helps make the skin appear firm and lifted.
-Prickly Pear Seed Oil: An excellent source of antioxidant vitamin E; improves elasticity for a youthful look.
-White Clay: Helps cut through and remove buildup.

However the Purifying Mask doesn’t say it’s for sensitive skin and it’s right. I’m using it because I have it, but I can’t leave the mask on for more than 8 minutes before my skin starts to feel like its burning (instructions say to use it for 10-20 minutes). When I take it off, my skin feels sensitive and is a bit red. But the next morning my skin is so soft, smooth and again I haven’t had a break out since using it. So I’m a bit torn about whether or not I want to keep using this Purifying Mask. This one definitely has some pros and cons.

But as for the Clarifying Mask, I’m sold. This is by far one of the best masks I’ve ever used and even turns a mask-hater like me into a convert.

Anyone else try the Tata Harper masks and what did you think? I also recently purchased two more Tata Harper products because I’m so in love with her stuff! What have you tried?

{June 2020 update: I wanted to add an update to this post since there have been some developments with the founder of this company liking racist comments on her Instagram as well as blocking anyone trying to have a discussion about racial injustice (or now just ignoring them). Thus I can no longer support this brand, not that I have been much. I haven’t re-purchased any of these masks, nor liked any of their other products I’ve tried (a body cream gave me a rash last year). Save your money and I recommend not purchasing from this brand.}

Slip Silk Pillowcase Review

via

As you know, I sometimes like to review much-hyped about things even though they aren't in the ethical or sustainable realm (like Away luggage or Glossier products) because just like you, I want to know is the product really worth it or is it all marketing?  Well the Slip Silk Pillowcase has been on my radar for awhile now.  I mean who doesn't want to sleep on a pillow case that promises anti-aging?

So what do I think?

Ok so the claims are definitely a tad over-hyped (I mean c'mon there's no anti-aging anything really other than cosmetic surgery) but I will say that this silk pillowcase does have benefits and I haven't gone back to a regular pillow case since buying this one (coordinated bed sheets be damned, lol)!  My favorite part about this silk pillowcase is that it prevents those sleep creases on my face, which as I get older take longer and longer to disappear (thanks to waning elasticity in my face).  This is especially important to me since I'm a side sleeper and used to get those creases all the time.  Before getting this I tried to become a back-sleeper since my friend told me side-sleepers get more wrinkles on their face from sleeping on it, lol.  Nope, it didn't work so I'm so glad I got this pillow case instead.

The silk is a 22 momme weight made from Oeko-tex certified silk, which means harmful chemicals were not used for its production.  That also means they use non-toxic dyes (I have the white one so there's minimal dyes in that one especially).  I discussed momme weight before here.  For reference, Everlane uses about 16mm silk while Elizabeth Suzann uses 23mm silk.  Grana uses 22mm silk for their Georgette satin pieces (no longer readily available but you can still find it being used for their V-neck slip dress).  And since I had a bunch of Grana credit left over, I thought I might as well try to make some silk pillowcases out of them (since it will mean they are essentially free for me).  And well I made them and tried sleeping on it but it's not the same, even though the momme weight is the same.  And that's because Slip uses a special charmeuse finish that makes it softer and more breathable when compared to the Georgette satin.  So at least I know I'm really getting a great product from Slip that can't be easily copied.

Also they do mention in their FAQs that they "work closely with our suppliers to ensure that fair workplace practices are enforced and that only the highest quality materials are used."  But they don't advertise where they make their products so I'm pretty sure they're made in China.

So yes, $79 is a lot for one pillowcase, but it's the only pillowcase you'll ever need for the rest of your life.  Just take care of it well (I machine wash on delicate with the Laundress Delicate wash and hang dry).  This product is definitely worth it for me and it's the tiny bit of luxury at the end of the night that makes sleeping just that much better!

P.S. If you're wondering if their Slip Silk Sleep Mask is worth it, I'm going to say that's a big fat nope.  I loved the pillow case so much, I purchased the $50 sleep mask for travel and I have to say it's not comfortable.  Either I have an abnormally large head or they make it way too small but it's tight around the head and puts pressure on the eyes.  Save your money on this one and just skip the sleep mask.

La Mer Review: The Moisturizing Matte Lotion

So I already have one thing to add to my worst purchases of 2018 and it's this lotion.  Womp womp :( I really wanted to like it, especially since it was a ridiculous $260 for this lotion.  Yep, isn't that insane?  Luckily I had some thank you points from my Citi credit card so I did not pay that much out of pocket.  But then I think of all the things I could have spent those points on and it makes me sad.  But on the bright side, I get to let all you acne-prone people know to stay away from La Mer.  And that's because their top ingredient (and what they're known for) is Algae (seaweed) extract.  And that is a pore-clogging ingredient.  *facepalm* . Of course I should be checking ingredients before spending so much money on something.  But guess I'll have to learn this the hard way.

Anyway if you have normal, not acne-prone skin this is actually a pretty great product.  It left the parts of my skin that didn't break out soft and helped my makeup from feeling too greasy during the day.  It's not a primer, but just a mattifying lotion.  Is it worth $260?  No, I don't think so even if your skin doesn't break out easily.  You are definitely paying for the name and the hype.  But if you tend to have combo/oily skin that doesn't break out easily, and an extra $260 lying around, sure it's great.  As for me, I'll stick with my cheap(er) but non-comedogenic lotions.

Anyway I'm selling this lotion, used about 7 times, at 75% off here.  Since it's a pump mechanism, the lotion inside hasn't been exposed to the elements.  So if you're interested in trying La Mer at a deeply discounted price, here's your chance!

Glossier Super Pure Serum, Milk Jelly Cleanser, and Generation G Review

glossier-super-pure-review.jpg

So I'm finally doing part 2 of my Glossier product reviews after having thoroughly tried out these last three items in my initial order from Glossier (for part one I reviewed the boy brow and the stretch concealer here).

So let's start with this Super Pure serum.  I have a history of sensitive, acne-prone skin so whenever I see a product promising clearer skin I'm always down to try it out.  Unfortunately for me this product did not work :( . (<--lol that is exactly how my face looked for a week, with a zit that wouldn't go away on the left side of my chin).  So this product is supposed to prevent zits by clearing sebum and whatnot.  But I still developed a zit.  And then I made the mistake of putting it on the zit for the first couple days of inflammation.  At first it looked like the redness went down but then the zit just wouldn't go away.  And it kept getting bigger with multiple white heads (so gross, I know).  Eventually I treated the zit how I normally treat zits (first pop it with this tool and then let it dry out on it's own.  Sometimes I'll also ice it to calm the inflammation).  I read else where that this product worked for them, but I think it really does depend on what your skin is like (I mean I can't even handle Neutrogena without breaking out).

glossier-milk-jelly-cleanser-review.jpg

Luckily, I found more success with Glossier's milky jelly cleanser.  An initial look at the ingredients did show that there is one possible pore-clogging ingredient (isopropyl myristate) but it's way down on the ingredient list, and I found I had no issues with this cleanser.  In fact I would say it works really well.  It removes all makeup and doesn't leave any kind of residue.  But when I use this product I still end up rewashing my face with my favorite charcoal cleanser from SkinSalvation.  But I find when I use both cleansers, there's no trace of makeup after (as opposed to when I just use the charcoal cleanser alone).  Out of all the products I've purchased from Glossier this is definitely one of my favorites (along with the boy brow).

glossier-generation-g-review.jpg

And last but definitely not least, Glossier's generation G matte lipstick.  I purchased it in the color Zip.  I'm not a huge fan of matte lipstick since it tends to be a lot more maintenance than I'm used to (making sure your lips are not flaky and also making sure the matte lipstick doesn't bleed).  The last time I tried a matte lipstick it was from Nars and it was a terrible experience.  Not only did it really dry out my lips but it bled to the point it looked like I had clown lips.  Ever since then I've been weary of matte lipsticks and have stuck with my usual lip glosses or balms (a current favorite is actually the RMS lip shine in Sacred).  But I have to say Glossier did a great job with their generation G matte lipstick.  It goes on smooth and it's pleasantly not drying (well yes it will be a tad drier than a lip gloss or balm, but it's not that much drier).  And best of all it doesn't flake my lips.  So if you're looking for a great matte lipstick, definitely give this a try.

So some final thoughts about Glossier:

~ It's definitely a trendy brand right now with their minimal and slick packaging and great marketing.  And yes some of their products are good (maybe even 'cult-worthy'), like the boy brow and milky jelly cleanser.  But I'm not about to jump on the Glossier band wagon since like a lot of beauty brands, sometimes the hype is bigger than the actual results they deliver.

~One thing that turns me off a bit from this brand is all the packaging that this brand uses.  They products not only came in individual packaging but also with an exterior pink plastic pouch.  And then all of that was in a box.  Of course some people may like that, but to me it's such a waste.
